Johnson & Johnson has been found liable and has to pay $72 million to the family of a woman whose death from ovarian cancer was linked to her use of the company’s talcum powder products. The jury, by a majority vote, found that Johnson & Johnson was negligent, that it knew of the dangers of the products, it failed to warn consumers, and it conspired to conceal the risks of its talc-based products (which in this case were Baby Powder and Shower to Shower).
This case was tried in St. Louis, Missouri, and it is the first U.S. jury to award damages over these claims. There are over 1,000 filed lawsuits that are still pending, and this case has alerted many women throughout the country to this danger who may want to consult with their doctors to find out whether they are also injured by talcum powder or to find out if they are currently at risk.
