“The simple act of building a home can become a powerful expression of love — helping families find dignity, security, and hope.” — Jimmy Carter (U.S. President & Habitat for Humanity volunteer)
On Saturday, October 18th, the HKGC Krewe continued our annual tradition of volunteering with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity at the 2025 Bench and Bar Build.
This annual event brings together members of the legal community, including judges, attorneys, paralegals, etc., in hands-on service to build affordable homes for local families. Participants spend a day on a Habitat build site helping construct homes and supporting Habitat’s mission to make safe, decent housing accessible to all. Through sponsorships and volunteerism, the Bench & Bar Build strengthens neighborhoods and highlights the power of the legal community to create lasting change in New Orleans.
This year was a first – we have painted, built windows, done landscaping, and more, but this year we were able to build the walls of the home. The Habitat site supervisor told us that it was the most rewarding job in a build, and we agree! We had an added bonus of using wood boards decorated by local high school students filled with messages of hope, encouragement, and New Orleans spirit.

We want to thank New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity for the opportunity to give back and make a positive impact in our community. The work is challenging but incredibly rewarding, and we’re grateful to be part of it. We look forward to joining future builds and continuing to support this meaningful mission.
