This time of year, it is dark outside when leaving the office, and we see homes lit up with outdoor lighting, holiday lawn decorations, wreaths on doors, and decorated trees in windows. “Jingle Bells,” “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” and even Cheech and Chong’s “Santa Claus and His Old Lady” play on the radio.

The winter holidays are a magical time when the email traffic slows down, the courts take time off, and we are fortunate to spend time with family and friends. It is a reminder to live and enjoy life. Abraham Lincoln once said, “At the end, it is not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”

The life of a trial lawyer involves long hours spent poring over documents, managing cases, traveling for depositions, and really getting to know your clients like family to properly represent them. However, the demanding nature of our profession can lead to extreme stress, anxiety, and burnout if we do not carve out time for ourselves. We need to recognize the importance of enjoying life away from our work — including our phones, tablets, and computers — and the benefits it can bring to our personal and professional lives.

Taking time off helps us recharge, foster creativity, and improve focus. Engaging in hobbies, exploring new interests, or simply spending time with friends and family can provide a much-needed contrast to the rigors of our work.

Whether it’s hiking the cliffs over-looking the Pacific Ocean in Carmel by the Sea, playing golf at Pebble Beach, or enjoying a cocktail and a good book at the pool at the Carmel Valley Ranch, these activities can lead to enhanced mental well-being. (Note the not-so-subtle plug for our Post-Legislative Conference in Carmel June 22-25, 2025.)

This time away from stressing about our work allows us to return to our practices with renewed energy and a fresh perspective, ultimately benefiting our clients.

Our profession often involves high levels of pressure, and neglecting personal time can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and tension. By prioritizing work-life balance, we can mitigate these effects. Activities such as yoga, meditation, and regular exercise can serve as valuable stress relievers. Firms that encourage their attorneys to engage in such activities often see improved morale and productivity among their teams.

Social connections are vital for emotional health. We benefit immensely from nurturing relationships outside of work. Building a strong support system can provide a buffer against the pressures of the legal field. Whether it’s joining a local sports league, participating in community service, or simply catching up with friends over dinner, these interactions are essential for maintaining a well-rounded life.

Many firms are beginning to recognize the importance of our well-being. They are adopting flexible work schedules and encouraging employees to take time off. These changes not only enhance the quality of life but also contribute to a more positive workplace culture. When our associates and staff feel valued and supported, they are more likely to thrive personally and professionally.

A lawyer who takes care of their personal life is also often more empathetic and understanding. This emotional intelligence is crucial in building strong client relationships, as clients are more likely to feel heard and valued. A positive attorney-client relationship can lead to referrals and long-term business, which is vital in a competitive legal landscape.

As the holiday season and new year approach, we need to take time to enjoy life outside of work to maintain our well-being and effectiveness. By prioritizing self-care, we can combat the stresses inherent in our profession.

Ultimately, a balanced approach leads to happiness and being healthier, and both allow us to better serve our clients and the community at large.

The recently deceased Quincy Jones once said, “I’ve always thought that a big laugh is a really loud noise from the soul saying, ‘Ain’t that the truth.’”
