According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on August 19, 2014, nSpired Natural Foods, Inc. voluntarily recalled certain retail lots of Arrowhead Mills® Peanut Butters, MaraNatha® Almond Butters and Peanut Butters, and specific private label nut butters (listed below) packaged in glass and plastic jars because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
What is Salmonella?
- Salmonella is a bacteria which is usually found in food and causes food poisoning and other injuries. Food can be contaminated during food processing or food handling. The symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Usually symptoms will develop in 12 to 72 hours after infection and will last from 4 to 7 days. Salmonella infections are especially dangerous for children and the elderly as it can cause dehydration.
How did nSpired Natural Foods, Inc. find out about the potential salmonella contamination?
- The potential risk was brought to nSpired’s attention by the FDA following routine testing. There have been four reports of illnesses that may be associated with salmonella contamination in the products listed below.
Where have the potentially contaminated products been distributed?
- United States, Canada, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Dominican Republic and the internet
- Sold at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Safeway, and other retailers
How to determine if you have the contaminated product?
- The products can be identified by their lot numbers and “Best by” dates, which can be found on top of the lid. “Best by” dates cover a wide range, between December 2014 and July 2015. (See below)
