One of the most common ways to cause a car accident is to be a distracted driver. Each day in the United states, more than 9 people are killed and more than 1,060 people are injured in car crashes that involve a distracted driver.
Distracted driving involves driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving. There are three main types of distracted driving: (1) VISUAL: taking your eyes off the road; (2) MANUAL: taking your hands off of the steering wheel; and, (3) COGNITIVE: taking your mind off of driving.
Distracted driving includes things like using a cell phone, texting, eating, and using a navigation system. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study analyzed 2011 data on distracted driving and found that 69% of drivers in the United States ages 18-64 reported that they had talked on their cell phone while driving within the 30 days before they were surveyed. 31% of drivers in the United States ages 18-64 reported that they had read or sent text messages or email messages while driving at least one within the 30 days before they were surveyed.
According to the CDC study, in 2011, 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, which was up from the 2010 data.
